The events also give nonprofits the chance to talk with staff about all things Qgiv! Make sure to check out our next Client Workshop Series event in June in Chicago, IL if you\u2019ll be in the area!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Do-Able Development Plan<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Stephanie Cory, CFRE walked attendees through the basics of forming a development plan based on an organization\u2019s strategic plan. We were joined by an unexpected guest, a guide-dog-in-training named JD. The photo depicts\u00a0one of his quieter moments.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/JDLookatMe.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"386\" height=\"516\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10044 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/JDLookatMe.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/JDLookatMe.jpg 386w, https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/JDLookatMe-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 386px) 100vw, 386px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick overview of our takeaways:<\/p>\n<p>A development plan should be a dynamic (not static!) document that consists of your organization\u2019s needs, goals, strengths, and priorities. Three basic questions to get you going in the right direction are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How much money do you need to raise?\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t make this an arbitrary number! Do some research into last year\u2019s fundraising and see what is manageable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>From whom will you raise it?\n<ul>\n<li>Is your donor base big enough? Do you need to appeal to new donors?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>How much money can you spend to raise what you need?\n<ul>\n<li>Keeping cost of acquisition low is important. If you raise what you\u2019d like, but wind up spending a huge portion of it on mailings, swag, and ads, you\u2019ve defeated the purpose!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s imperative that your plan includes measurable goals, deadlines, and milestones to meet along the way. Each goal should also be assigned to a specific individual or team\u2026 and it shouldn\u2019t always be the Development Director! Every goal should be accompanied by an action plan that includes what, when, why, and by whom it will be accomplished.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/example1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"891\" height=\"452\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10026 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/example1.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/example1.png 891w, https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/example1-300x152.png 300w, https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/example1-768x390.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 891px) 100vw, 891px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"765\" height=\"237\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10025 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/example-2.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/example-2.png 765w, https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/example-2-300x93.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019ve laid out your plan, be sure to add (in the plan or as an addendum) any content you\u2019ll need, design for any materials, mailing dates for appeals, etc. You\u2019ll also want to include any event dates and timelines, as well as proposal deadlines.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, once you have your plan, don\u2019t just forget about it! It should go through regular review and evaluation and should be updated at LEAST annually. If it\u2019s not working, change it!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Resources<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Stephanie mentioned a\u00a0couple of fantastic resources during her presentation. Check them out!<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Fundraising Effectiveness Project<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2006, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy at the Urban Institute established the Fundraising Effectiveness Project (FEP) to conduct research on fundraising effectiveness and help nonprofit organizations increase their fundraising results at a faster pace. The site contains a wealth of reports, tools, and resources for nonprofits.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/afpfep.org\/\">http:\/\/afpfep.org\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Standards for Excellence Institute<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Standards for Excellence Institute\u00ae is a national initiative established to promote the highest standards of ethics, effectiveness, and accountability in nonprofit governance, management, and operations, and to help all nonprofit organizations meet these high benchmarks. Our program is a system of nonprofit sector self-regulation and replicated by state, regional, and national associations and support organizations.<\/p>\n<p>The centerpiece of the Institute\u2019s program is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/standardsforexcellence.org\/Home-2\/The-Code-of-Excellence\">Standards for Excellence\u00ae: An Ethics and Accountability Code for the Nonprofit Sector<\/a>. The Institute also publishes comprehensive\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/standardsforexcellence.org\/Educational-Resources\">educational resources<\/a>\u00a0and offers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/standardsforexcellence.org\/Events\">training<\/a>\u00a0to nonprofit organizations to help them strengthen their practices.\u00a0Accreditation and recognition\u00a0is available to organizations that submit to a thorough third-party review.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/standardsforexcellence.org\/\">https:\/\/standardsforexcellence.org\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Their Fundraising Fitness Test is of particular interest! <a href=\"http:\/\/afpfep.org\/tools\/\">You can find that here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many thanks to everyone who joined us for the first event in the Client Workshop Series on May 3rd in Washington, D.C.!
