Thank you so much to everyone who joined us at the Lakeland Fundraising Lab on April 16th. Sending messages or content that frame your nonprofit as the hero rather than your donors won\u2019t do you much good!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To really get donors\u2019 attention in an information-overloaded world, Ian presented these four strategies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Become a media company<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a mobile strategy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create attention-grabbing content<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create a community around that content<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are creating quality content that is&nbsp;<strong>valuable<\/strong>&nbsp;to your donors and putting it on the devices and platforms they use most frequently, all while taking the time to create a community of engagement and trust around that content, your chances at success will skyrocket!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>How to Build a Better Appeal<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah Sebastian, Director of Brand Communications at Qgiv, went step-by-step on how to craft a better appeal letter, from what people look at first in the letter to how to catch people\u2019s attention with the envelope!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How donors skim an appeal<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pictures<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Choose powerful images<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People are going to feel more connected to a picture of a person or animal looking happy and healthy than sad or sick<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Salutation<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t \u201cDear Friend\u201d your donors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try to use a salutation that matches the person\u2019s interest if you don\u2019t have their name. For example, use something like \u201cDear Animal Justice Warrior.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Johnson Box &amp; Post Script<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>79-90% of readers look here first!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Great place to make an ask<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Signature<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Use someone besides the CEO to sign, like a volunteer or board member. If it is the CEO\u2019s signature, try to include a personal note.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be creative with the signature! For example, if your appeal is for an animal shelter, have the signature be from an adoptable pet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Body of the Appeal<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Make it easy to scan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure that it\u2019s donor-centered. It should contain more \u201cyou\u201d language than org-centered language.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read the letter out loud!
