You want to maximize fundraising, of course, which means you\u2019ll want to focus on inviting people who will actually bid on your items. On the other hand, you\u2019ll inevitably have event attendees who won\u2019t participate in the auction at all. Whether they\u2019re not bidding because the items don\u2019t appeal to them or because bid amounts have surpassed their budget, there are still ways to get them involved!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have one or two of these elements built into your next silent auction to engage&nbsp;<em>all&nbsp;<\/em>your attendees, even if they never place a single bid!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Offer fund-a-need items<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Fund-a-Need.png\" alt=\"fund-a-need auction item - fill a backpack $50\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>When I went to my first silent auction, I was straight out of college and had just started my first \u201cgrown-up job\u201d after years of waiting tables. The auction items\u2019 base prices would have stretched my finances, but bidding activity quickly put them out of reach. Luckily, there were other ways to give; I could \u201cbuy\u201d school supplies for local students by donating. I couldn\u2019t afford a trip to a luxury beach cottage, but I&nbsp;<em>could&nbsp;<\/em>donate $30 or so to pay for some binders, notebooks, and pencils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This kind of item, which I later learned were called \u201cfund-a-need\u201d items, are widely appealing to silent auction attendees. Bidders and non-bidders alike appreciate donating tangible items to a good cause! Fund-a-Need items are generally smaller-dollar purchases that are nevertheless important to a nonprofit\u2019s services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try offering fund-a-need items at your next event! Brainstorm some good items to include\u2014fund-a-need items are generally more appealing if they tie in with your organization\u2019s mission. Some examples of great fund-a-need items include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>School supplies, backpacks, and books for education-orientated nonprofits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scholarships, camp tuition, or other service fees for students or community members<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dog food, grooming supplies, or vaccinations for animal shelters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food items or \u201cmeals\u201d for food banks and soup kitchens<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When setting up your fund-a-need items, make sure to offer options in a variety of price ranges! Remember, this is a way to engage&nbsp;<em>everyone<\/em>&nbsp;at your event in addition to raising money for your cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sell raffle tickets<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Raffle-Tickets-in-GIvi.png\" alt=\"raffle tickets auction item - $5\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Can most of your donors afford to bid on a $10,000 all-expenses paid trip to the Bahamas? Probably not. Could most of your donors afford to spend $20 on raffle tickets for a neat item? Probably!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/14623-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Raffles are a common fixture<\/a>\u00a0of many different kinds of fundraisers because they\u2019re so effective! Whether you\u2019re selling lower-cost tickets for smaller items or more expensive tickets, boost engagement by offering a multi-ticket discount. If tickets are $5 each, consider offering a 5\/$20 deal; donors love a deal and will often opt to buy more tickets!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Include other ways to give<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Include donation opportunities in your event. People who attend may not be drawn to any of your auction items, but they&nbsp;<em>are&nbsp;<\/em>drawn to your cause. They wouldn\u2019t be there otherwise!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you build your silent auction strategy, consider how you can give attendees the opportunity to donate. Some good ways to achieve this include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Allowing event donations during the registration process<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Having a giving app so staff and volunteers have the ability to take in-person donations (hint: this is also handy for selling raffle tickets and other items!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating a text-to-donate keyword for your event and including it on event signage and other materials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Including donation options in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/mobile-bidding-app-based-vs-browser-based\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">your silent auction site<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Making a brief appeal for donations (or ongoing support) during the event<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your donation opportunities shouldn\u2019t detract from the primary call to action, which is to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/encourage-bidding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bid on auction items<\/a>. But including various donation opportunities in your event gives everyone a chance to support your cause regardless of their giving capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The possibilities for engaging non-bidders at your next silent auction are nearly endless, and what works for one organization may not be the best fit for yours! If you want to plan to engage everyone at your upcoming event\u2014even non-bidders\u2014start by providing additional ways to give.
