Lots of those donations are tithes or\ngifts to places of worship. Those gifts and tithes are a valuable source of\nincome, but they can present a problem for faith-based organizations: when religious\ndonors make a set, regular gift, inspiring them to donate to additional causes\ncan be difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What can you do to inspire donors to give outside their regularly\nscheduled gift?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have some ideas! In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/5-key-takeaways-from-our-study-with-campaign-monitor\/\">our recent study with Campaign Monitor<\/a>, we learned most donors to various causes are more likely to give outside their regular cadence if appeals include real stories about real people who will benefit from a gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you want to inspire donors to give outside their\nregular giving pattern, you\u2019ll need to tell them stories about real people and\ncommunicate how a gift can make an impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>First, Find Your Story<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In our study, 61% of our respondents (there were more than\n1,000 of them!) said the #1 thing that would inspire them to give outside their\nusual pattern was a story. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What stories can you share? If you don\u2019t know where to\nstart, look to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>People who benefit from your programming<\/li><li>Volunteers or \u201cboots on the ground\u201d staff who\ncan share their experiences<\/li><li>Board members or leadership figures <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Telling a great story helps your fundraising by showing\ndonors what their money can accomplish and how that impact affects real people.\nInstead of donating to a faceless organization, they envision themselves\ndonating to individual people. Here, donors are connected to real people they help when they donate to this organization.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Then, Choose Your Images<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Humans are visual creatures! Hearing a story about how a\ndonation can impact peoples\u2019 lives is powerful. Adding images to help us\nvisualize who a donation will help is even more effective. Telling stories\nabout the people your donors fed over the holiday season is a good step;\nshowing them those people is even better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make the biggest impression on your donors, choose photos\nthat:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Include one person or a small group of people\n(they\u2019re more effective than crowds!)<\/li><li>Includes eye contact between the subject and the\nviewer<\/li><li>Generate feelings of hope, happiness, or\ninspiration (as opposed to sadness, fear, or hopelessness)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When donors give regularly, it\u2019s easy for them to \u201cset it\nand forget it.\u201d Inspiring them to give outside of their regular cadence is\nhard! Our study with Campaign Monitor showed that 60%\nof donors want to see that your organization has proven results with past\ngifts. If you want someone to give \u2014 especially if you want them to give\noutside their usual timing \u2014 show them they\u2019ll make a difference! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Help donors envision exactly how the world will be a better\nplace if they make a gift. Will fewer people be hungry? Will more people have a\nsafe place to sleep? Will families be lifted up? Communicate those results!\nDonors are more likely to make a gift if they feel their gift will make the\nworld a better place and that you will be a good steward of the money they give\nyou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"679\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Catholic-Charities.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Catholic-Charities.png 450w, https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Catholic-Charities-199x300.png 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption>This is a great example of communicating impact while asking for additional support.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Finally, Make Your Ask<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve expressed a need, you\u2019ve told a story, you\u2019ve\nconnected donors to real people, and you\u2019ve shown them the impact they can make\nby giving. Now all that\u2019s left is to actually ask for the gift!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s tempting to assume that, at this point in the donor\u2019s\njourney, they should <em>know<\/em> you want them to make a gift. But that\u2019s not\nthe case! One of the top reasons donors don\u2019t give is simply because they\u2019re\nnot asked to give. Be sure to ask!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you ask someone to donate, take time to include a few\nelements of your story in the appeal. Ask them to give, tell them who their\ngift will help, and communicate how their gift will make an impact. The number of people helped changes with different amounts.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">If you\u2019re a faith-based organization, many of your donors may already be giving to their places of worship (or even your organization itself!) on a regular basis. That habitual generosity is wonderful, but it can make asking for additional donations tricky. To inspire people to donate outside their usual cadence, share stories with them. Identify a powerful story, connect donors to the people their gift will support, show them their potential impact, and ask for help.
