About Women\u2019s History Month<\/h2>\n\n\n

The origins of Women\u2019s History Month<\/a> date back to 1978 when the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women created a \u201cWomen\u2019s History Week\u201d celebration. The commission selected the week of March 8th for their celebration to correspond with International Women\u2019s Day.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By 1981, the celebration had spread far and wide, enough that President Jimmy Carter officially made the week of March 8th, 1980 National Women\u2019s History Week. The annual week-long celebration continued until a collection of women\u2019s groups and historians led by the National Women\u2019s History Project (now the National Women’s History Alliance) successfully lobbied Congress to pass Pub. L. 100-9 which designated the month of March 1987 as \u201cWomen\u2019s History Month.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 1995, presidents have issued annual proclamations declaring March as Women\u2019s History Month, celebrating the contributions women have made to the United States. Each proclamation also recognizes the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every year, the National Women\u2019s History Alliance selects a yearly theme to focus on for the month. This year, the theme is \u201cWomen Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.\u201d<\/a> This theme \u201crecognizes women throughout the country who understand that, for a positive future, we need to eliminate bias and discrimination entirely from our lives and institutions.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learn about the history of women\u2019s rights <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of the best ways to celebrate Women\u2019s History Month is to educate yourself about the history of women\u2019s rights. Reading books, watching documentaries, and listening to podcasts are all great ways to dive into women\u2019s history and learn more about why Women\u2019s History Month is so important. Educating yourself about women\u2019s history is also a great way to better understand the issues that women face today. Do some research and see if there are any organizations or schools near you that are hosting workshops, lectures, film screenings, or other educational opportunities you can attend! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Support women-owned businesses <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Women-owned businesses are a vital part of the economy<\/a>, employing 10.1 million workers and generating $1.8 trillion in receipts in 2019. With such a major impact, it\u2019s important to help keep female entrepreneurs and women-owned businesses thriving. During Women\u2019s History Month, shop at and support women-owned businesses! Support women\u2019s nonprofits <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Women Helping Women Fund is based in Spokane, Washington and dedicated to empowering women and children in the community. They harness the power of collective giving to fund grants for local programs that work to support women like the YWCA, Girl Scouts, and various domestic violence coalitions. In addition to grants, the fund has a focus on research and data collection to combat poverty and childhood adversity and to ensure that they are focused on areas with the greatest need.
