And it\u2019s easy to see why! Finding one or two donors to fund a large, expensive project is hard. For many nonprofits, asking many donors for smaller gifts is easier and less intimidating.<\/p>\n<p>Crowdfunding has been used to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/tanyaprive\/2012\/11\/27\/what-is-crowdfunding-and-how-does-it-benefit-the-economy\/#59f63024be63\">fund everything from movies to new inventions<\/a>. But crowdfunding for nonprofits is most successful when it\u2019s funding specific projects that already fit with a nonprofit\u2019s mission.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.councilofnonprofits.org\">Crowdfunding for nonprofits<\/a> is more than coming up with a cool idea and setting up a page \u2013 it\u2019s an art! A successful campaign engages donors, tells a story they\u2019ll find compelling, inspires them to give, and encourages them to share the campaign with their friends. That\u2019s a lot to consider!<\/p>\n<p>You can accomplish many of those goals on your crowdfunding page. Here, we\u2019ll break down an example of a crowdfunding form and show you how each element of the form encourages donors to give.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Crowdfunding-Form.png\">full-size image of the form<\/a>. I built this page for my (non-existent!) nonprofit in a few minutes, and I evaluated each element again this morning to see how I could make it better.<\/p>\n<p>Here we go!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Header<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This is arguably the most important part of your form! This is where you\u2019ll make your appeal. Use <strong>good images and a short, powerful story to bolster your appeal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Crowdfunding-header.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8307 size-full\" title=\"Crowdfunding for Nonprofits: The Header\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Crowdfunding-header.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Crowdfunding-header.png 500w, https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Crowdfunding-header-300x158.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>WHAT I DID<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here, I established that my nonprofit\u2019s volunteers were running out of room to grow food for our community. I used a picture that went along with the project, I established how the money would be used, and I asked people to share the page with their family and friends.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>WHAT I WOULD IMPROVE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>To make this a more powerful ask, I would choose a different image that shows volunteers in a greenhouse or volunteers building a greenhouse. Those are hard images to find in a quick Google search!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d also re-write the appeal to be more personal \u2013 I\u2019d use more \u201cyou\u201d and \u201cyour\u201d words, and I\u2019d refer to &#8220;families&#8221; or &#8220;people&#8221; instead of just referencing our community.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Amounts<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When for-profit companies or inventors use crowdfunding, they often offer incentives based on the level of a person&#8217;s gift. You can do something similar! Instead of offering a gift, <strong>show donors what their money buys<\/strong>. Donors want to know that their money is actually going toward a tangible goal. Giving them a way to visualize how their money will be used connects them to the work you\u2019re doing and how they can make a real impact on the project.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Suggested-Amounts.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8308 size-full\" title=\"Crowdfunding for Nonprofits: The Donation Amounts\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Suggested-Amounts.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Suggested-Amounts.png 500w, https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Suggested-Amounts-300x289.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>WHAT I DID<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I tried to associate each suggested amount with something tangible. Even the smallest suggested donation amount is associated with something important, so each donor feels like their gift matters.<\/p>\n<p>Note that there\u2019s an option to give a custom amount \u2013 that\u2019s important! Don\u2019t force your donors to give only certain amounts; that\u2019s a great way to lose out on a gift.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>WHAT I WOULD IMPROVE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d probably add a sentence or two about how each donation makes a difference and reference how even custom amounts are important.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Fields<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This is part of a donation form is often neglected. <strong>But it\u2019s important!<\/strong> Not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/resources\/donation-form-check-up-checklist\/\">optimizing the fields<\/a> donors must complete makes it less likely that they\u2019ll finish their gift.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The-Fields.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8309 size-full\" title=\"Crowdfunding for Nonprofits: The Fields\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The-Fields.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"926\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The-Fields.png 500w, https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The-Fields-162x300.png 162w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>WHAT I DID<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are a few key points here. The first is that I kept any additional fields \u2013 donation dedications, extra questions, etc. \u2013 to a minimum. There\u2019s also a check-box for donors who want to use the same billing and personal address, which means they don\u2019t have to enter information twice.<\/p>\n<p>I <em>did<\/em> include the option to make an anonymous donation and a way for people to opt in to additional emails from my group.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll notice that the security seals at the bottom of the form are right beneath the \u201cMake a Donation\u201d button. This assures donors that their information is secure. This is especially important!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>WHAT I WOULD CHANGE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s not a lot I would change here. Most of these fields are the bare minimum required to take a donation online.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Thermometer<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Thermometers are a staple of crowdfunding for nonprofits. They help donors (and nonprofit staff) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/features\/fundraising-thermometers\">track progress in an easy-to-digest way<\/a>. They also <strong>show donors that they\u2019re working toward a goal<\/strong>. Humans are hard-wired to want to achieve goals, so it\u2019s a great way to motivate donors.<\/p>\n<p>Part of what makes crowdfunding a good fundraising tool is a sense of urgency. That sense of urgency is what inspires donors to give <em>now<\/em> instead of putting off making a gift. There\u2019s also a count-down, and donors can see exactly how much people have already given.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>WHAT I WOULD CHANGE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d replace the line \u201cHelp Us Build a Greenhouse!\u201d with something a little more exciting.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Social Sharing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Crowdfunding, especially crowdfunding for nonprofits, depends heavily on social sharing. Making it easy for people to share your page is so important! The more eyes you can get on your page, <strong>the more people are likely to support your cause<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The-Social-Sharing.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"338\" height=\"290\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8310\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The-Social-Sharing.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The-Social-Sharing.png 338w, https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The-Social-Sharing-300x257.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 338px) 100vw, 338px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>WHAT I DID<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I included a social sharing widget right under the thermometer. The buttons are accompanied by a short blurb encouraging people to share.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>WHAT I WOULD CHANGE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Setting up this widget made me realize something: I don\u2019t know the best practices around this! On the one hand, social sharing can make or break a crowdfunding campaign. On the other hand, many experts suggest removing any calls to action or links on donation forms to avoid distracting donors.<\/p>\n<p>Next time, I\u2019d do some more research. As it is, the three major crowdfunding platforms (IndieGoGo, GoFundMe, and Kickstarter) all include social sharing buttons near the top of the forms just like I did. Although those platforms don\u2019t specialize in crowdfunding for nonprofits, they <em>are <\/em>the ones who pioneered this style of fundraising. I\u2019ll follow their example!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Side Content<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Every nonprofit has a story to tell. Including a small area on your page on to<strong> talk a little about why your mission is important<\/strong> is a go-to tactic for many nonprofits.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The-Side-Blurb.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"265\" height=\"500\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8312\" src=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The-Side-Blurb.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The-Side-Blurb.png 265w, https:\/\/www.qgiv.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/The-Side-Blurb-159x300.png 159w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>WHAT I DID<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I included a small blurb about why my nonprofit\u2019s mission was important. I also encouraged people to join us as we grew food to give to families who needed it.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>WHAT I WOULD CHANGE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The side content was actually what I debated most. On one hand, I don\u2019t want donors to get distracted from the donation process by reading about our mission. On the other hand, I want to inspire them to get (and stay!) involved.<\/p>\n<p>Next time, I\u2019d do some testing to see if including a blurb about our mission distracted donors, inspired donors, or didn\u2019t make a difference.<\/p>\n<h2>This is Just the Beginning<\/h2>\n<p>Your crowdfunding form is only part of your campaign.
